While commonly called red chalcedony, I find the color is more orange to red orange. Hematite causes this coloration, but later phases of growth (second generation) dont contain hematite inclusions. This creates a colorless

or bold Halloween patterns of orange and white stripey stalactites

which often grows in small spots along the junctions of the hydroxyapophyllite crystal

The dark matrix is likely manganese-based

with tones of brown

For the same reason it is also common to have light fracturing or chipping at points and junctions of polished faces

but these specimens from the renowned N'Chwaning Mines region form tabular square crystals similar to wulfenite
