2010 Château Pontet-Canet, Pauillac, BordeauxA few years ago proprietor Alfred Tesseron gave us a blind tasting of four Pauillac wines from the 1996 vintage. They turned out to be Mouton, Latour, Lafite and Pontet Canet, and the last named lost virtually nothing by comparison with its lofty peers. We reckon he could repeat the exercise this year with the same results. This is a monumental wine, seamlessly brilliant on the palate, exuding class on the bouquet. Everything is in such balance and

the 2014 vintage equals the 2015 in this northern sector of the Médoc

this full-bodied second wine is better than many vintages of the grand vin from the 1940s and 1950s

and least sunny in almost half a century

but that depends on how those stems are assimilated

blue and black fruits as well as some toasty oak and crushed rock

whose family has been farming grapes in the village of Crézancy since 1683

(77% Cabernet Sauvignon

but as it opens up there is tons of blueberry and raspberry fruit

All the elements are in the right place
